Windows 10 Mouse Pointer Disappeared: Finding a Cursor That Vanished
The mouse moves, clicks may even register, but there is no arrow on the screen. When the Windows 10 mouse pointer disappeared, using the PC becomes a slot dewa guessing game.
A missing pointer can mean the touchpad or mouse is switched off, the cursor has wandered onto a second screen, or a setting is hiding it. Display drivers and Windows Explorer glitches are other causes.
Since you may not be able to click anything, keyboard shortcuts are the key tools here. Tab, the arrow keys, Enter, and the Windows key let you navigate without a pointer.
Most cases are fixed in seconds once you know where to look.
Why This Happens
The pointer disappears for these reasons:
- The touchpad was disabled with a function key.
- The pointer has moved onto a monitor that is switched off or disconnected.
- “Hide pointer while typing” is hiding it during keyboard use.
- The mouse driver, display driver, or Windows Explorer has a glitch.
Some laptops also hide the pointer after waking from sleep until the touchpad is touched.
Start With These Basic Checks
Try the simple keys first.
- Press the touchpad toggle key, often an Fn key combination with a touchpad symbol.
- Press Windows + P and choose “PC screen only” in case the pointer is on another display.
- Move the mouse in large circles, or plug in a different mouse.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and then Escape, which often redraws the cursor.
- Restart the PC using Alt + F4 on the desktop and the arrow keys.
If a USB mouse brings the pointer back, the touchpad was switched off.
Going a Step Further
Adjust pointer settings and drivers.
- Press the Windows key, type “mouse settings,” and press Enter.
- Use Tab to reach “Additional mouse options,” press Enter, then use Ctrl + Tab to reach the Pointer Options tab.
- Untick “Hide pointer while typing,” and tick “Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key.”
- Press Windows + X, then M, to open Device Manager, and update the mouse or touchpad driver.
- Update the graphics driver from the manufacturer.
With the Ctrl option enabled, pressing Ctrl shows a circle around the pointer, which makes it easy to find on large or multiple screens.
A Word of Caution
Before uninstalling a pointing device driver, make sure you can navigate with the keyboard or a second mouse. Download drivers only from the PC or device manufacturer.
Wrapping Up
A vanished pointer is usually switched off, hidden, or lost on another screen. Use the touchpad key, Windows + P, and pointer options to bring it back, and update drivers if it keeps disappearing.
